The first Concert of the 2018 season at Montrose Folk Club will be provided by Tony McManus, regarded by many as the best Celtic guitarist in the world. Tony will be playing in Montrose immediately after an appearance in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of the annual Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.
Originally from Paisley, Tony McManus has lived in Canada since 2003. Over the past two decades, the virtuosic music produced by Tony McManus on the accoustic guitar has taken him to five continents. His contribution to guitar music was recently recognised with a Gold Medal, voted by the readers of Accoustic Guitar Magazine. Fellow recipients were classical guitar legend, John Williams, Spanish flamenco genius, Paco de Lucia, and Australian rock guitar God, Tommy Emmanuel.
Tony’s 2009 record, The Makers Mark, won universal acclaim, even in the Rock Guitar press, where jigs and reels would have been unheard of prior to its release.
The most recent Tony McManus album took a different path altogether, exploring the music of Bach, Couperin and Granados.
The late lamented John Renbourn of Pentangle Fame described Tony McManus as “the best Celtic guitarist in the world”, whilst Paul Reed Smith of Master Guitar Makers, PRS Guitars stated – “Tony McManus is the Jeff Beck of the accoustic guitar”. Over recent years, Tony McManus has also developed into a very fine Singer.
