For a long time now, drummer Romek Parol and bassist BJ Anders have been fondly reminiscing about the five fantastic years they had, touring and recording with the legendary Mick Green, as the rhythm section of The Pirates. They often said how much fun it would be to do something similar again, especially since Mick Green's untimely passing in 2010. But who the hell would front such a band?
In July 2012, Pete Edmunds moved to South Wales to be with his beautiful new girlfriend, (check out "Valley Girl" on the album!), and found himself living a mere sheepsthrow from Parol in the next valley....they soon started chatting and quickly agreed that it would be appropriate to get together and "make some racket"..... Pete was extremely nervous about this first encounter, as Romek had spent half a decade playing and recording with one of his heroes and biggest guitar influences, but was quickly put at ease when he finally snook a glimpse at Parol during "Peter Gunn". Romek was playing away, head down, with a big grin on his face!!.... Parol rushed home and got straight on the dog n bone to BJ in Sweden.... "I think we've found him!!!!!"......
BJ was quickly onto a plane and in South Wales to investigate. After the three got together over a lengthy Sunday dinner with much red wine and beer, BJ returned to Sweden hatching a plan.
Pretty soon the call was placed, and on June 26th 2013 Edmunds and Parol flew out to Sweden for an intensive week long session in BJ's Helsingborg studio. The result is the 11 track album "Kastin The Spell", a tip of the hat to Pete's old mate Wilko Johnson, the aforementioned Mick Green and The Pirates..... But don't be fooled into thinking that this is just a tired old tribute. There is a healthy mix of covers and originals.... New life has been burned into classics, like "All Through The City", "Going Back Home", "I Can Tell" and "Kastin' My Spell On You"..... Edmunds' SRV and Omar Dykes influences are obvious in smouldering originals "Bad Blood n Voodoo", "Vodka Headed Woman", "Ain't Gettin Mad, Gettin Bad" and "Valley Girl". There's even some very tasty slide guitar on Rollin and Tumblin/Down In The Bottom..... BJ and Romek are delighted at having someone who can, at last, fill Mick's shoes...and Pete's positively howlin in delight, at the moon, every night, at having Mick Green's former powerhouse behind him!!..... The results are EXPLOSIVE!!!!!!!!!!
October 23rd 2013 saw the band travel up to North Wales for a 45 minute live TV appearance at Glyndwr University's CMT facility. Much of the album was given a live hammering in front of a select, enthusiastic studio audience. The results were so good, that two old Pirates gems, " Don't Munchen It " and " Gibson Martin Fender ", were quickly added to the CD as bonus live tracks, in time for its worldwide release on February 10th 2014, to excellent reviews. A selection of songs from the shoot were posted by the band on YouTube and " Going Back Home " was given an airing through Wilko Johnson's Facebook page. The response was phenomenal! Over 1000 likes in one hour! The enquiries started to flood in from all over the globe and the fan base underwent a huge increase!!
A fantastic working relationship was soon forged with Stephen Stanley at Solid Entertainments, and the date sheet started to fill! The band's live launch was headlining at The 100 Club, London in March 2014. Now, the boys are lined up for a long run of festival appearances throughout the summer, including SIX with Wilko Johnson!! A UK tour will commence in September, with gigs overseas to follow shortly after.
This rapid and exponential rise left a slight problem over logistics however, and in early April 2014 it was very sadly announced that BJ would have to stand down from the live side of the band. With his production company, BMA, studio and live commitments in Sweden, it would be virtually impossible to keep up with The Spellkasters growing schedule. He will be remaining on board, however, to produce the band's future albums. His last gig will be at St. Ives on May 11th 2014, one of the Wilko Johnson festival dates.
BJ's replacement was a natural choice.... Mr. Stuart Uren.... A seasoned professional with a long and glittering pedigree, and a pre-ordained Spellkasters link! Many years ago, Romek and Stuart were a very tight, and very much demanded " rhythm section for hire ", known as " The Ealing Feeling!! " .... So these two stalwarts will continue to provide a powerhouse engine room for the band! Since those heady London days, Stuart has worked with a stunning array of artists..... including Bernie Marsden, Gwyn Ashton, Kenji Suzuki ( Simply Red ), Gail Ann Dorsey ( David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz ), and many more. Stuart was also with Del Bromham's Stray from 1979 until 2012!
